SENĆOŦEN language nest strives to revive traditional tongue

Tucked in a small building at the W̱SÁNEĆ School Board on West Saanich Road is a roomful of big-eyed youngsters who are part of a movement to revitalize their traditional language.

The group of eight preschoolers are part of a language nest – created by their parents’ generation to rebuild the SENĆOŦEN language.

“It’s a survival school,” says Renee Sampson the school co-ordinator and teacher. She’s one of seven apprentices in the language spurring a number of initiatives to rebuild the tongue, including the SENĆOŦEN LE,NOṈET SCULÁUTW̱ which means SENĆOŦEN Survival School.

Students in Victoria will be holding events on campus on February 1st as part of the Canadian Federation of Students’ day of action. The campaign urges the provincial and federal governments to work together to reduce tuition fees and student debt, and to increase funding for public post-secondary education.

Facilitate Support Groups for Girls: Workshop

The Victoria Restorative Justice Society is encouraging participants to attend its two-day Facilitator Training workshop from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Jan. 16th & 17th, 2012, at DistrictResource Centre, 6843 Central Saanich Road, Victoria, BC. The workshops wil teach adults how to facilitate cutting-edge support groups for girls.

The Girls Circle Association and its research based model will be taught. This model has shown significant increases in girls' self-efficacy, attachment to school, decreases in alcohol use, and self-harming behavior. Attendees will learn to implement the widely-acclaimed Girls Circle model, a proven method of promoting positive social growth and development among girls.
