Facilitate Support Groups for Girls: Workshop

Media Release from the Victoria Restorative Justice Society

The Victoria Restorative Justice Society is encouraging participants to attend its two-day Facilitator Training workshop from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Jan. 16th & 17th, 2012, at DistrictResource Centre, 6843 Central Saanich Road, Victoria, BC. The workshops wil teach adults how to facilitate cutting-edge support groups for girls.

The Girls Circle Association and its research based model will be taught. This model has shown significant increases in girls' self-efficacy, attachment to school, decreases in alcohol use, and self-harming behavior. Attendees will learn to implement the widely-acclaimed Girls Circle model, a proven method of promoting positive social growth and development among girls.

Bridges For Women Society - Career Mentoring Program

Bridges for Women Society is a non-profit agency with over 20 years of experience in empowering women with a background of abuse and trauma. They have been a solid part of Victoria's advocacy community, and a strong voice for women's rights.

They are looking to match career mentors with mentees beginning in July. Mentors offer support to clients while they work towards their career or educational goals, introduce them to professional networks, share feedback and provide encouragement as they practice their employability skills. Mentors are asked to commit to only five or six hours per month.

Free Workshop on the basics of Composting

On Saturday July 2nd, the Compost Education Centre will be hosting one of its monthly "Composting Basics" workshops. It's totally free, just preregister to ensure yourself a spot. Here are some of the reasons why composting is important from their website:

"Kitchen and yard waste typically comprise about one third of household garbage. If we all composted kitchen and yard waste, in addition to recycling paper, bottles, and cans, we could reduce the amount of garbage destined for the landfill by 50%! By returning organic matter to the soil instead of sending it to the landfill, we can turn waste into a valuable and versatile resource...
