Victoria Downtown Public Market Society's Winter Plans

Story by B Channel News

The Victoria Downtown Public Market Society (VDPMS) plans to build a permanent downtown year-round public market. After the success of the Eat Here Now Fest – Victoria Harvest Food Festival, the society is well on their way to promoting further interest. Estimates placed attendance to approximately 10,000 people on the hottest day of the month. In the coming winter season, the market will continue to take place within warmer spaces so nothing freezes to death.

“When it comes to winter vegetables, the farmers are growing more hardier products,” revealed Philippe Lucas, organizer of the VDPMS.

He also believes that having a market in the downtown core is a great opportunity to promote the farmers and food producers.

The Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria (Occupy Victoria) has its first meeting

Story by SocialCoast News

Just after sunset yesterday, an excited group of about 75 people met in Centennial Square to discuss the tactics and methods to be used during The Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria (Occupy Victoria) event that is set to begin on October 15th.

The Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria (Occupy Victoria) event has been created in an act of solidarity with the other "Occupy" movements that are happening around the world. Modelled after the occupations of public squares in Egypt and Spain, the Occupy Wall Street event was the first of its kind in the U.S. Today, the people involved with Occupy Wall Street have been protesting daily, and camping out nightly, to demand radical change to the current economic and political systems. In New York, they are on day 18 of the occupation.

Similar occupations have began in Washington, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Miami, Portland, Maine, and Denver. There are dozens of other cities expected to join the occupation in their own cities on October 15th of this year.

Victoria Street Newz Releases October Issue

The Victoria Street Newz began in 2004. Every month they release a new issue with local stories, opinion pieces, art, and poetry. Their paper relies solely on donations and street vendor sales. What makes the Street Newz unique is that the vendors (who may rely on disability or old age pensions, or may be unemployed) are able to supplement their income by selling directly to pedestrians who are passing by.

Check out this link to download the September Issue, which is now online.
