Oil Scare Turns FedEx On To Energy Efficiency

Posted in Environmental Sustainability, Economics and Finance

story by npr news

The rising cost of oil isn't just a hit to the family budget. Businesses are hurt, too. Few are more affected than firms like FedEx. The Northern Gateway Pipeline Has Been Stopped!! April Fools: In fact, 700 gathered in Comox yesterday, but the new federal budget suggests nobody is listening.

Posted in Environmental Sustainability, Politics and Democracy

STORY BY LLIAM HILDEBRAND FROM SOCIALCOAST

This Saturday, March 31st, over 700 people gathered at the Comox Community Center to demonstrate their opposition to the Northern Gateway Pipeline.  Over 60 students made the trip up from Victoria along with others from all across the Gulf Islands to have their voice heard.

There were many passionate speakers, including Ta’kaiya Blaney, an 11 year old Sliammon girl, who sang a very moving song that she wrote when she was 9 called “Shallow Waters”. Members of the K'ómoks First Nation performed traditional songs, and Rob Fleming, the NDP’s Environmental Critic and MLA for Victoria-Swan Lake gave one of the most powerful speeches of the day, reminding everybody about the provincial NDP’s strong opposition to the Enbridge pipeline.

Community garden plots see growing demand

Posted in Food and Health

By Derek Spalding, Times Colonist

Dustin Boggs was one of several volunteers who suffered the wet weather Saturday afternoon to help complete the latest in a rapidly growing number of community gardens in Greater Victoria.

Fifty-five volunteers put in 300 hours over the past few weekends, constructing 24 above-ground garden plots at Cecelia Ravine Park, near the Gorge Waterway.

Like many, Boggs wants to show his children that food doesn't come from plastic bags. This push for food security, demonstrated in 100-mile diets and heightened awareness about where food comes from, has increased the popularity of urban agriculture in communities all over North America.
