<p><span style=\"outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 10pt; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\">Postal workers across Canada could be forced back to work under a proposed law that the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is calling unnecessary, unjust, and counterproductive. Minister of Labour Lisa Raitt has served notice of the government's intent to introduce back-to-work legislation. <br style=\"outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" /><br style=\"outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" />This legislation is contrary to ILO Conventions and contravenes the fundamental right of all workers to organize and to bargain collectively. It indicates clearly where the new Conservative Party government of Canada intends to take labour relations in that country.<br style=\"outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" /><br style=\"outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" />Denis Lemelin, CUPW National President, said 'We never got a chance in this round of bargaining. Canada Post spent months just saying 'no' and misleading the public about our proposals. Now, as we call for a meeting with Canada Post's President, the Harper government is going to rescue him from any responsibility to negotiate realistically with the workers.'<br style=\"outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" /><br style=\"outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" />The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has been trying to bring proposals to the bargaining table that address health and safety issues around Canada Post’s new sorting machines and delivery methods. It has also offered proposals for innovation and expansion of the public postal service.<br style=\"outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" />Canada Post’s focus on concessions has made it impossible to negotiate. CUPW members are fighting to keep their collective agreement from being eroded and are also resisting wage rollbacks for new hires.<br style=\"outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" /><br style=\"outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" />Please join the global campaign to preserve collective bargaining rights in Canada by sending the message below to the Canadian government, and the Minister of Labour.</span></p>

<p>I am urging your Government not to introduce or support back-to-work legislation aimed at ending Canada Post’s lockout of members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. Back-to-work legislation is an infringement on the right of all workers everywhere to free collective bargaining and only encourages Canada Post to remain entrenched in its demands.</p>
<p>Instead of introducing back-to-work legislation, your Government should:</p>
<p>- require Canada Post to immediately lift its lockout of members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers</p>
<p>- require Canada Post to reinstate the recently expired Urban Operations Collective Agreement. Once this is done, CUPW members will return to work</p>
<p>- require that Canada Post give their negotiators a new mandate to arrive at a new Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers that enshrines the principles of respect, dignity, and a sharing of the benefits of new technology.</p>
<p>Workers are part of the economy and your government's 'economic recovery' shouldn't be hurting us. Back-to-work legislation is unjust and unnecessary.</p>
<p>The Federal Government participates in the promotion of the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. Enacting legislation ordering locked out CUPW members back to work is in violation of these basic principles.</p>"){kind=small}
